Voyager is forced to evaluate their ethical beliefs, as well as those of an alien criminal justice system, when they rescue a Nygean prison warden, and his prisoners scheduled to be executed.

I can never take The Doctor seriously when he is talking about morality. I mean, just a few modifications to his ethical subroutines, and he can make the Jem'Hadar look peaceful.

@garfieldthree Since when is "an eye for an eye" a Christian "value"? For one thing, the quote is from the Old Testament, and therefore Jewish. And what is your definition of "Christian" and "value"? Most Protestant/non-Catholic nations are secular in nature, so you can hardly impugn their Death Penalties to their form of Christianity. Nations who are majority Catholic have the RC Catechism to deal with, which forbids Capital Punishment (CCC 2267). So, what gives?

that being said, the only reason why I oppose execution is because of the risk of offing an innocent (and at the same time letting the real culprit run loose - a double crime) in this case here however, if these men really are guilty then it doesn't pose much of a problem. it's more revenge than justice, perhaps, but there's nothing wrong with revenge cases where there is zero-doubt on the culprit's guilt, however, are extremely rare. for the most part these involve tyrants & war criminals

@garfieldthree you're wrong about associating christianity with capital punishment. leaving aside the "not kill" commandment (which many "christians" conveniently omit), you forget that you also get ATHEIST NEOCONS. in fact atheist neocons are even worse than religious neocons, because the former actually pretend to use reason & logic to impose their twisted views - these fake atheists (fake, since they worship the state) are actually a shame to the rest of the atheist & non-religious community

@L2die I completely agree with you. I never saw Archer, Kirk, Picard, or Sisko act as terribly and idiotically as she did.

@smellincoffee Maybe the policy Neelix was referring to only applies to people who are on death row. That or it's just another one of the many problems with this show.

@smellincoffee Well Janeway is arguably the worst SF captain ever. This is just one of her many blunders. It's a wonder they even made it 5 light years in the Delta Quadrant.

Most people who are still in favor of capital punishment still believes in the century old Christian value of "eye for an eye". The only way to get rid of capital punishment is to wait a generation or two for religion to die out and then people will finally realize that a dead man can't learn from his mistakes. Until then, just think of capital punishment the same way the Chinese do. "It's cheaper to shoot them. There's no morals involved, just economics.

@quomodocumque the problem with death as punishment is: what if you got the wrong guy? I'll tell you. you're a muderer. with such punishments, you weren't able to save you're 'morality' without losing it. so the perfect state would just be a perfect state until it would be forced to use the final punishment.

I agree with the Doctor. "Killing is wrong. No matter who's doing it." Yes, those men need to be punished, but if we decide whether they get to live or die, we are no different than they are. They get them in trouble for 'playing god', but it's okay if the government does it because 'we have the authority'!? Does that logic seem flawed to anyone else... As Tuvok would say, "It's a paradox..."

@TheReasonWhyGuy well they had Odo. the word you should have used was unique life. in every series there was at least one character that didn't fit with the rest of the crew, but manages to become the best character of the show.
