 | Horowitz was a great exponent of the Clementi Sonatas and there is an amusing story (Harvey Sachs, Rubinstein , A Life page 353) peripherally regarding them. A few days before a certain concert was to be performed on February 3, 1975, Daniel Barenboim, (pianist and at that time, conductor of the New York Philharmonic) received a message from Horowitz that he needed to see him. Barenboim had no idea as to what Horowitz wanted. Barenboim arrived at the appointed time and was received by a very "formal " Horowitz. (Horowitz opened the door), They sat down and talked about many things including Horowitz' Berlin days.. Barenboim recalled, He told a lot of stories?very one sided, Im sure, but it was still a lot of fun. Then Horowitz said, Tell me, you know Clementi Sonatas? Not really. Barenboim replied.. Horowitz then played several of the sonatas pointing out various fascinating figurations. None the less, Barenboim still wondered why Horowitz had requested the meeting. Barenboim realized that several hours had passed, and since he had to attend a rehearsal the next day, he informed Horowitz that as much as he had enjoyed the evening, perhaps he should take his leave. Horowitz replied, No, no, no. Stay. We're having a nice time and Wanda is not here: shes playing cards. (Then) in a sort of forced, intimate tone of voice, he said, Tell me, I read in newspapers that you are conducting with Rubinstein, with Phyilharnonyic. What he plays? I am now seriously debating whether this one is my new favorite. I always just took this sonatina for granted, played it as a kid (probably badly), heard several other interpretations (mostly not to my liking), and assumed it wasn't that great. But after working on it in depth for about a week and having developed my own ideas, I actually love this sonatina and consider it a masterpiece. Mozart could not have done any better. I don't like Clementi's "Allegro moderato" marking for the second movement and prefer it closer to andante. I add ritards where they aren't indicated and play staccato in the LH when Clementi indicates legato. Sorry for "breaking the rules", but I like it this way. Although I do not follow Clementi's directions in the second movement, I do follow them strictly in the faster movements. This is the fastest of all the Sonatinas, with "Presto" and "Allegro di molto" indications. Composers in the classical era like Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Clementi were very particular about differentiating a normal Allegro from "Allegro molto" or "Presto". This is why my quarter-note beat is faster in these movements than in the five other Sonatinas. I still play the Clementi sonatinas from my Schirmer edition I have had since being a young student.  | Arthur (6 yo) learned by himself to play his beloved Clementi's Sonatina. Arthur was out of teacher for 4 months. However he did not stop practicing piano and learning by himself all this period. This Clementi's sonatina seems to be a good one for a birthday milestone. Sometime ago his sister was practicing it for a while and Arthur liked it a lot. So he decided to learn it from the music score and from his memory. This is how it sounds now and Arthur would love to present it to his youtube friends. I already posted the first two Sonatinas in this set and the first movement in this one is when the Clementi Sonatinas start to get more difficult. Clementi intentionally made each Sonatina progressively more difficult so that there is a huge difference between nos. 1 and 6 in terms of technical difficulties and overall length. However, they are all full of delightful music regardless of whether something is "easy" or "difficult". I have learned not to think this way any longer. Music is just "good" or "bad" or perhaps "could use some improvement". I particularly love the second movement in this sonatina, since it offers probably the most music with the fewest notes in the entire piano literature. It is technically "easy", in fact the easiest of all movements of all the sonatinas. Yet, it is this slow movement, not the faster outer movements, that presents the true test of musical maturity. Whether something is difficult or easy does not matter, but as Leonard Bernstein said: "There is only good music and bad music". Clementi marked the second movement "Allegretto", but I really think this was a mistake, or if not, I like it slow and closer to adagio anyway.
