There's exactly one incident in the entire recoded history of the human race where naval bombardment alone forced ground troops to surrender and even that one was questionable, Hardly a good track record.

I'd say missiles. They have longer range, are more accurate, can be fired without warning and they carry much much more explosives.

Those cannons rifled or are they smooth-bore?

If the Iowa class battleships can launch 2,700lb projectiles 27 miles into the great beyond, I wonder how far they can shoot Justin Bieber? We should test this...for science.

The Military has already tested the 11" sabots, with great success. As I said, they decommissioned the battleships for the.. (2nd time?) so the sabot project was dropped. Read into it.

The sabot isn't my theory! It was the US Military's theory, from all the testing they did, which was mostly classified. Only certain aspects are available for the general public to read, which I have. I am literally just mentioning what I've read on the subject. My theory?? I couldn't come up with this stuff. And I refer to the 16" guns as Rifles, because the Navy does. All the Navy guys I've talked to, laugh when people call them guns. If the Navy prefers the term 16" Rifles, I will too.

But you can't be certain exactly where that first shell will land and since you'll be hitting targets very close to your own troops you can't afford that. If you double the range then the uncertainty factor goes up exponentially, making it an even bigger problem.

I didn't say we should cut defense, I said we should cut the bullshit projects. I won't turn this political. My mention of rifles being rifles implies the consistency factor. 16" guns don't need to travel a straight line to be very accurate, they need consistent factors, so the shells land roughly in the same spot, and they do. The grouping from maximum range is impressive. If you doubled the range using sabot rounds, to 50 miles or more, these guns would become much more useful.

Okay then, which defence projects do we cut? You can't cut the carriers since they've already been cut as far back as possible while still retaining the ability to actually build them. Neither can you touch the F-35 since a whole lot of the USAF airframes are nearing the end of their lives.
