Japanese police arrested a U.S. sailor on Thursday on suspicion of murdering and robbing a taxi driver. It's the latest case of crime linked to the U.S. military in Japan.

The seaman, Olatunbosun Ugboguwho of Nigerian nationality, had been in U.S. custody on a charge of desertion. They handed him over to Japanese police.

[Thomas Schieffer, U.S. Ambassador]:

"I want to express to you the heartfelt regret that all of us feel. This was a tragic incident. It puts a stain on all of us who try to serve America here in Japan."

61 year old Masaaki Takahashi was found dead in his taxi with stab wounds in his neck 2 weeks ago.
