The Beautiful Universe: Chandra in HD (Episode 1).

Since its launch on July 23, 1999, the Chandra X-ray Observatory has been NASA's flagship mission for X-ray astronomy, taking its place in the fleet of "Great Observatories."

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory is a telescope specially designed to detect X-ray emission from very hot regions of the Universe such as exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and matter around black holes. Because X-rays are absorbed by Earth's atmosphere, Chandra must orbit above it, up to an altitude of 139,000 km (86,500 mi) in space.

The Smithsonian's Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, MA, hosts the Chandra X-ray Center which operates the satellite, processes the data, and distributes it to scientists around the world for analysis. The Center maintains an extensive public web site about the science results and an education program.

Chandra carries four very sensitive mirrors nested inside each other. The energetic X-rays strike the insides of the hollow shells and are focussed onto electronic detectors at the end of the 9.2- m (30-ft.) optical bench. Depending on which detector is used, very detailed images or spectra of the cosmic source can be made and analyzed.

Chandra has imaged the spectacular, glowing remains of exploded stars, and taken spectra showing the dispersal of elements. Chandra has observed the region around the supermassive black hole in the center of our Milky Way, and found black holes across the Universe.

Chandra has traced the separation of dark matter from normal matter in the collision of galaxies in a cluster and is contributing to both dark matter and dark energy studies. As its mission continues, Chandra will continue to discover startling new science about our high-energy Universe.

I am supremely confident in the order of the universe. It might as well be a religion.

I would cede the point of being a fool if I didn't have my own proof through putting my pride aside, looking for God, and finding Him in countless ways. I have lived my life doing stupid things (drugs, etc), and it's all a dead-end. Reading the Bible has shown me there is something more. Honestly just read the Bible with an open mind, and be amazed at an overwhelming feeling you will receive. Say a quick, genuine prayer to Jesus, u have nothing to lose, only eternity to gain.

You have great faith lol. From the complexity of just one human cell, our brains, the way a man and woman 'fit' together, the properties of water, why a seed grows, why a baby is born, why we become conscious of who we are, the size of earth's atmosphere, the distance of the sun, the pull of gravity, why the oceans don't spill over the whole world, the IMMENSITY and BEAUTY of the universe, and MUCH MORE in between. Coincidence?!?! Only a fool would say 'there is no God'.

Fun fact: When you buy your gf a gold neckless or earring, and she asks where did you get it from? tell her that 4 billion years ago a star exploded and this is what came out from the inside of its heart, and now your giving it to her. gold is very underestimated.

Great stuff!!! Galileo would be amazed if he could see through even my humble telescopes and equipment, we've come a long ways.

Well, you're an atheist by choice and I'm a Christian by choice. That's proof that we both have a free will and can think for ourselves. If your atheism gives you fullfilment and purpose, fine,no problem. My faith gives me fullfilment and purpose also.It works for me,no problem.

Too right. No one here on planet Earth-religious or not- can claim to have the ulitmate answer to life, the universe and everything. Humanity still has much to learn.

Hell? That sounds like the many Gulags the Soviet Union under the Atheist dictator Stalin created in his attempt to destroy religious and all other freedoms in the 20th Century.

Ah,but God also gave us minds as well to inquire and contemplate its beauty as well, along with the ability to create, invent and think. Science helps us to understand His physical creation through the five senses we have. Has God really hidden the universe's beauty from us? I don't think so.

The universe began suddenly from a Big Bang did it not, and matter and energy suddenly came into existence! Now what caused the Big Bang? I'd love science to figure that out someday, along with the reason the universe and ourselves exist at all. I'll be waiting....
