As the standoff between the U.S. Navy has intensified in the Indian Ocean, with the pirates vowing to fight on as the U.S. Navy encircled them, analysts were pointing to the episode as evidence that international naval power may have a limited role in ridding the seas of the pirates. This is a real dilemma! Update: Capt. Richard Phillips rescued by Special Forces, 3 pirates killed, 1 captured and the pirates still holding some 200 hostages from many other countries around the world. 04/12/2009

Update: Im not sure about this and would be better if someone would clarify this for the sake of good info though. Recent U.N. imposed law with security teams on board with commercial vessels passing through those pirate infested territories are now not authorize to carry hi caliber weapons like 50 caliber machine guns. Commercial shipping lines must now file a request to UN for assistance with armed personnel carrying hi caliber weapons for the purpose of protecting the ship's cargo.

Sticking with the topic. - 99 percent of the Somali pirates are armed with the world renowned AK-47 and an old school RPG. These weapons are deadly and powerful if used by someone who know damn well its effective range, unfortunately those weapons specially their RPG is not accurate and if used on a commercial vessel on a long range situation the chances of those pirates capturing it are so slim which they must board the ship in order to gain control... --

Good idea! That's what most U.N member countries do when patrolling the seas of Somalia and its neighboring territories, though as said on the news the area is so so large and would take lots and lots of naval ships to patrol those pirate infested territories. Another solution to this now a days, many shipping companies now are hiring 2-4 man security team with military backgrounds aboard their ships armed with long range automatic weapons --

All countries around the world have Somalis pirates atacks, with Navy power and ground forces; only a common action without fear, will stop it, why dont put an naval block to their coast and and sent thats pirates to Holland for rest of their life or kill them

THE navy's should go undercover as a commercial ship and when they try to board " TO CLEAN HOUSE...Set an example to all pirates that if they attempt to keep attacking they will be KILLED...And shown on TV.. Sick and tired of all the BS....

We tried to help Somalia. Nato, the U.N., the Arab League, we all tried. They attacked those who were trying to bring them food and aid and cheered in the streets when International Aid forces left. They honestly thought that when they finally took control of the country the aid agencies would return. Once bitten, twice shy. I hope they enjoy eating dirt.

The pirates can only be stopped by blowing them up in the water. The Russian navy is doing that! The westerners must follow that example. The pirates are bandits and lawless. They are armed to steal and kill. These criminals cannot be rehabilitated by apprehending and kept them in custody for a few days, feed them and release them is a totally wrong move and dangerous. A soft hammer cannot forge a thick inch steel plate - you need a solid steel hammer to forge it.
