seperate self defense tape. They just threw some stuff together. He also agreed that some of the techniques weren't the best.

There's some schools that teach stuff like this as additional practical things that don't require practice that you could employ and may not have thought of, and generally they do work under the right conditions. But they're no substitute for learning real self defense. They could potentially in a situation save your life if everything you know goes to shit, but definitely don't count on being able to stick your finger into someone's throat from the get go.
