Property worth millions of shillings was completely destroyed by a fire that gutted down shops in Mariakani area early Thursday morning. The fire, which started from one of the shops in the town, razed more than 16 other shops among them two foodstuff wholesale shops, a hotel and a chemist. Those who lost their property in the fire blamed the area local authority for failing to acquire fire-fighting engines to manage such disasters. Nothing was salvaged from the 16 shops as the fire engine truck from Mombasa arrived more than three hours after the fire started. A businesswoman who owns several stationery shops in the area said among the properties destroyed during the 1am incident in her shop included printing and photo copying machines.
