Whew! This was the hardest video for me (by far) to make. I started this script on August 21, 2009 and I'm finally finishing this up almost a year later. I would encourage anyone who has any questions to make comments, I'll by happy to try to help because I think this is a very important, albeit very difficult concept to understand.

The format is a little different, I used a green screen for the first time, please let me know what you think.

After this, I think I need to start DeepLobotmy.com

    Thanks for your patience!

The grade filter is the species itself in my opinion. When they reach a certain stage, they will wipe themselves out. I believe this is the fate of the human race.

Any chance we just haven't found a way to decode or even notice the signals?

Perhaps there can only ever be one "intelligent" life on a planet, at the expense of others. Call it what you will, survival of the fittest, apex predator, whatever. It's an idea, at any rate. Ahhh, but with a universe this large, who can say...

Well, for all your study of the universe you've at least learned one thing: How to pop into existence out of nothing.

We are our own filter. It only takes a guy with a grudge and the push of a button

what so many people overlook is that intelligent life could form on MANY planets if it was very probably for intelligent life to self destruct at a certain point ... "Now, how about your own observed position in human population history? To regard it as fairly ordinary rather than highly extraordinary, all you need do is to think that humans will fairly soon be extinct." --John Leslie / 1999

@tdarnell Where is the next edition of Life in the Universe? Or is there simply not much more that can be said beyond The Great Filter?

Yeah, that's what I always thought too... people always say the right temperature needs to be, or oxygen, or water, etc... but species on other planets might have evolved in completely different conditions. Like you said, may breathe methane gas (like Grunts in Halo! :P) or may be flatter and lower to the ground due to heavier gravity, or survive in extreme temperatures... makes you think!

Highly advanced aliens would still probably use the electromagnetic spectrum like we do to send signals. I don't think its very practical to run cables between planets.

Think about this tho. What if the building blocks necessary to support life on earth isn't the same everywhere. For example what if somewhere way in another galaxy there is a planet with life supported by methane gas? We shouldn't assume all life needs liquid water to support it.

The basic building blocks for life could have originated elsewhere and spread across several planets in out solar system e.g. from a comet's tail... thus it may be wrong to draw conclusions if we do find signs of life in our solar system. Also more advanced technology civilizations might not need to send out signals that would. All the aliens might have cable ;o)
