    I'd say it's a transition with no distinct lines. "Homo Sapiens Sapiens: The human that knows that it knows", posess a conciousness that is able to inspect itself in what would appear to be a much greater degree than any other animal. A cat for instance, has free thought only within the frames that it's nature will allow. In that sense, saying that "our thought is free" makes a lot of sense to me, as our thoughts are so significantly less limited than the thoughts of other species on earth :P
