    can't that be simplified just by having 5 dots on finger tips, then a Physics library will translate the position of those dots on 3d space and analyze the movement? this is lame ..

    as far as i can tell, Kinect uses cycling projected Infra-red fringe patterns, then an IR camera sees how the pattern projects onto the 3D objects. (ie: i think the Kinect hardware has 2 cameras, and one IR projector) this video shows what fringe images are and how they are used: watch?v=DiY45jALWjE only with Kinect you can't see them - they are in Infra-red. Since most people don't have a projector - it's not so simple to implement en-mass with existing hardware (ie: webcam).

    Love it! This is the sort of "low tech" ingenuity we need! Bit laggy, but I suppose researchers don't have access to the quadcore monsters we consumers have :P
