This is a simple and easy lesson on what fill flash can do for you when shooting into back light. Its one of the 1st chapters from my new DVD, Canon 580 EXII / 430 EX II Speedlite Crash Course DVD. Ive made it especially for beginners, so its easy to understand and help you to use your flash like a pro in no time. It will be available for order in late April of 2009 from my blog at: http://www.michaelthementor.com/store

If the flash is attached, it should behave in a similar way. If I am not mistaken, the camera input control will override any settings on the unit. I make all the changes on the unit however, as it is easier.

Brought this and it is very informative. just one question I use the canon 5d mark ii and the canon speedlite 580 mark ii and I seem to be having a few issues with it, I am having an issue with the on camera flash compensation, it does not seem to make any diferents to the flash. when you say change the flash compensation i presume you mean on the flash gun not on the camera is this correct?

What impact (if any) does metering have in this situation? Just wondering. Thanks. :)

He mentioned Canon but photography fundamentals go for all equipment. Nikon's have flash exposure compensation functions; you will need to look in your camera's manual to find out where it is. As he stated in this film (1:34), all cameras with flashes have this function. My dad uses Nikon with flash compensation so I know Nikon's do but don't know if they have a different name for it. Just an FYI if you want Nikon specific info check out the 'Nikonians'. A blog of Nikon lovers.

The polarizer isnt cheap btw... In any case, if you use polarizer you lose some light stops, so you have to increase exposure... I think it would be useless in this case!
