Problems with a car's cooling system are usually indicated by a car that generates too much heat, a car that overheats or a car that runs cold all of the time. Check the thermostat and radiator if a car engine is overheating with help from an auto mechanic in this free video on car repair and diagnostics.

You forgot to mention that if the system has a leak anywhere it will make the motor overheat because the boiling point of the antifreeze is raised 3.16 degrees for every lb of pressure that the system contains. The rad cap leaking pressure off to the overflow bottle happens quite a bit. Also a lot of vehicles have to have the system bled to get the air out because trapped air creates a low pressure pocket within the motor that will create steam and boil the coolant out. Happy wrenching.

It's a VAG (Volkswagen/Audi) problem; The plastic propellers fracture and the shaft just spins inside it, usually followed by a severe overheat with head gasket or engine failure.

I'm surprised that he didn't mention one of the major causes of overheating....A LEAKY HEAD GASKET. Often a very small leak in a head gasket will cause you to lose small amounts of coolant in the form of vapor. You may smell coolant after driving the car for a bit but you never see it leak. In many cases it just leaks to the outside and doesn't show up in your oil.

I have a 98 Olds Cutlass with overheating. ASE mech has repaired leaky intake, replaced water pump, hoses, flushed radiator now recommends new radiator. whistling that accelerates as the engine is revved. I hear gurgling under the hood but sounds close to the dash when I start and stop; only little coolant lost around cap when it overheats (190 deg). I am female and sceptical of mechanics. Insight into your knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I have already spent $1200, but not fixed.
