The eruption spat 1m wide rocks into the sea, like pieces of salt. The shock wave can be seen racing down the sides of the volcano, throwing up dust storms. The vent blew ash clouds 2km into the atmosphere. The explosion could be heard 3,000km away just like the original explosion in 1883.
