This popular folk song, according to Alan Lomax, originated in North Carolina. One of the earliest versions was a plantation song called "Cindy Ann" though the version known today was written by Benjamin Weisman, Dolores Fuller and Fred Wise, using the name "Cindy, Cindy." It has been recorded by many artists, including Pete Seeger and Buffy Sainte-Marie, Johnny Cash and Nick Cave, Elvis Presley, and The Kingston Trio. It was featured in the movie "Rio Bravo," sung by Ricky Nelson, Dean Martin and Walter Brennan.
