My attempt to play these two songs about shipwrecks - on the fiddle. Reuben James was written by Woody Guthrie, but there are no words here, and the tune is traditional.

Woody Guthrie was with the Merchant Marines when the Reuben James went down. He wanted to pay tribute to all the sailors, trying to actually list all their names. He then came up with the line, "Tell me what were their names" and rhymed it with "Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James." He was a lyricist, not a tunesmith.

Yes. As "Wildwood Flower" came first I probably should use that title. But I put this up just after the song of Reuben James and just before The Titanic. In the intro to the former I did mention that Woody Guthrie used "Wildwood Flower" as the tune. I'm a big fan of the Carter Family too!
